Take Good Care Of Yourself--Doctor, Can We Talk?

How well do you and your health-care provider talk and listen to each other? Many people feel that their doctors or nurses are competent and caring but that they are too busy to answer questions in detail. Others may forget the questions and answers because they are worried or are rushed through a visit. Your health and your life depend on the information you receive...ask some questions, and find a way to get the answers.

For an illness or symptom:

  • What is wrong?
  • Can you draw me a picture or show me what is wrong?
  • What causes this type of problem?
  • Can I prevent this from happening again?
  • How serious is this?
For tests or treatments
  • What if I do nothing?
  • What do you advise?
  • Why is it needed?
  • How will it help me?
  • What are the risks and costs?
  • What are the side effects?
Which should I report to you?
  • How will the results of the tests be helpful to you?
  • How should I prepare for tests or treatment?
