Talk About FeverFever is sometimes defined as a body temperature above 99.6 - 100) degrees Fahrenheit, measured by mouth. A fever is a sign the body is defending itself against a virus or bacteria. If the fever persists more than 48 hours, it may mean an infection is present.If bacteria infect the kidneys, appendix, brain, ears, or throat, it is a more serious situation. If a person is obviously sick but does not have a fever, do not assume it is not serious. Allergies, some medicines, or a weak immune system, may prevent fever.
