Talk About Fever

Fever is sometimes defined as a body temperature above 99.6 - 100) degrees Fahrenheit, measured by mouth. A fever is a sign the body is defending itself against a virus or bacteria. If the fever persists more than 48 hours, it may mean an infection is present.

If bacteria infect the kidneys, appendix, brain, ears, or throat, it is a more serious situation. Look for any of the following changes, and if they happen, consult a doctor.

See a doctor if the person with fever:

  • Has a body temperature above 103 degrees Fahrenheit, and the fever is not lessened by a bath and Tylenol in one hour;
  • Has trouble breathing or wheezing;
  • Has a seizure;
  • Cannot touch the chin to the chest;
  • Doesn't "act right," is confused, or doesn't respond to what is said;
  • Has lower right abdominal pain;
  • Has bad pain in the chest, head, or ears;
  • Has a red, sore throat for 2 days;
  • Does not improve after 72 hours.
A child under age one must see a doctor for fever, since the child is much more likely to become seriously ill. A person over age one may or may not need to see the doctor, or take medicine for fever. Check in a self-care manual to learn more about what to do for fevers.

If a person is obviously sick but does not have a fever, do not assume it is not serious. Allergies, some medicines, or a weak immune system, may prevent fever. Always trust your feelings if you are concerned!
